13 Reasons Why

So I finished the book, "13 Reasons Why." about a week ago and here's my take on the book!  WARNING MAY CONTAIN SOME SPOILERS.

So what is the book about? Well, from what I got, it's about this girl, Hannah Baker who committed suicide. Before that, she sent out 13 tapes as to why she committed suicide. Those 13 tapes make its way to a guy named Clay Jensen, who finds out that he is part of the 13 tapes. The whole night, Clay listens to all 13 tapes. Clay then discovers certain things about Hannah that will change Clay's life forever.

Sadly, I would have to say that the book did not live up to the hype. I have been hearing lots of great reviews from this book. People would say, "It's definitely a must read" or "Such a great book" and such. While I wouldn't say that its not a must read or its not great. I'm just saying, I expected more from all the great praise.

I would say it was an "alright" book. Nothing special. Now one would ask, "What didn't you like about it?" First of, I found the way Clay acted towards Hannah, a bit annoying. Whatever Clay heard on the tapes, he believed. He'd get mad at whoever Hannah talked about, he obviously listened to the tapes with bias in his mind. I don't blame him, that's because he was madly in love with Hannah, but I still found how Clay acted to be annoying. Secondly, the way Hannah would treat herself, or see herself. Especially towards the end. She mentions that she's been thinking about suicide, yet she doesn't do anything, and let the bad things happen to her. Bad things that just push her more towards suicide. If not that, then Hannah would do the obviously wrong thing to do. An action that would obviously end up bad if you just stop to think about it. It was given an impression that Hannah was a smart girl, she would've figured it out. I'm not some heartless man here, don't get me wrong. Some of the people she mentioned on the tapes were actually genuine jerks and Hannah couldn't have done anything to stop it. Did she at least try? Yes, and that is what was admirable. Some parts of the book that got on my nerve, I had just pointed out and those were mainly the reason why, for me, the book did not live up to the hype.

Wanna share your thoughts? Feel free to comment! I bought a book called, "Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk awhile ago will start tomorrow! Heard some good things about it and I'm hoping it would live up to the hype! Peace.
